Twitter may be your best route to the people who can help. At the same time, a company can gauge what customers are saying about it and prevent small problems from becoming big ones.

Zappos, an online shoe store, encourages its employees to use Twitter. The company set up its own Twitter site to capture every tweet that mentions it. Customers really like feeling more personally connected, this is a way to develop a deeper relationship with them.

Spike (formerly called Spike TV), a division of MTV Networks, is an American cable channel designed for an audience described demographically as young adult males. The channel began life as The Nashville Network (TNN), founded by WSM, Inc. (a subsidiary of National Life and Accident Insurance Company) in a joint venture with Group W Satellite Communications on March 7, 1983 and acquired a few months later by Gaylord Entertainment Company.

In early 2003, another name change was announced. The new brand, Spike TV, was marketed as the first television channel for men. (Eventually, early in 2006, the channel would begin, in promotional segments it airs, referring to itself simply as Spike.)

Funny commercial promotional video for Spike being the new home for the network showings of the Star Wars movies.

So what is going on here? If you are reading this post, you have just landed on the newly web presence of DIO. This was a big move, and we wanted to ensure our branding and web presence reflect the type of services we offer. Messaging is very important, and the old site was not appropriate to showcase our offering effectively.

The idea was simple. DIO wanted to offer a nice, simple environment for people to review our work, how-to’s and reviews. There is still work to do, and always will be. Stay tuned for some really cool up and coming projects. If you have any questions are interested in a site of your own, contact us!

All entities involved are generally people, but that need not always be the case.

Other examples of entities include animals, businesses, or even locations or materials. The tracking and reporting may range from word-of-mouth to statistical analysis of thousands of data points.

Reputation management has come into wide use with the advent of widespread computing. This is evidenced by a recent front page story in the Washington Post featuring several online reputation management firms. Reputation management systems use various predefined criteria for processing complex data to report reputation. However, these systems only facilitate and automate the process of determining trustworthiness. This process is central to all kinds of human interaction, including interpersonal relationships, international diplomacy, stock markets, communication through marketing and public relations and sports.

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging, and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.

Phishers are targeting the customers of banks and online payment services. E-mails, supposedly from the Internal Revenue Service, have been used to glean sensitive data from U.S. taxpayers.

Attackers who broke into TD Ameritrade’s database (containing all 6.3 million customers’ social security numbers and very sensible information) also wanted the account usernames and passwords, so they launched a follow-up spear phishing attack.

If you receive an email announcing the launching of a State Vaccination H1N1 Program and advising you that you need to create your personal H1N1 (swine flu) vaccination program on the website of the Centers for Disease Control, delete it. It’s a scam.

Dropping malware like this:

vacc_profile.exe
File size: 130048 bytes
MD5 : 5767b2c6d84d87a47d12da03f4f376ad

The email carried links to download to create your “patient profile” which is actually a phishing attack and a Trojan horse program sent out by people who define themselves hackers, but they haven’t any ethic. Crackers nothing else.

For the film District 9, through a network of websites, digital creatives reproduce the reality of a human population exasperated by living with aliens, who are called “prawns” because of their appearance. The aliens are taken to the ground and placed in camps that quickly become ghettos.

Realism goes far beyond the common flash site, but it includes realistic examples of protest through blogs, websites with corporated propaganda and more. Nothing is left to chance.

The alien ideology may be followed on Twitter or Facebook, it’s so real. The sensation is an immersive and complete experience. You believe to be there with them. You may think to follow and interact with a social environment populated by humans and aliens.

Immersivity has been completed with an old-style website about “Maths from outer space” dated 1994 in the footer.

Today a new tool, called Augmented Reality (AR), may help your company to get people excited for the release of a product. Augmented Reality is a term for a live direct or indirect view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are merged with, or augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery – creating a mixed reality.

The augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmental elements. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally usable. Artificial information about the environment and the objects in it can be stored and retrieved as an information layer on top of the real world view.

Augmented reality is basically a way of overlaying images information on a video screen or a display. Equipment needed for this is only a webcam, a computer and a printer to print out the image. But that is about all you need.

Sony teamed up with a Hollywood marketing firm, called Trigger, to create an augmented reality for the alien thriller film District 9. They are using augmented reality to get people pumped up about this movie.

Best Buy printed a Sunday newspaper insert with an AR shape and it was a bit disappointing. With AR we can see it in 3D and click to get more info. GE used AR to show wind and solar energy in 3D, pretty cool but still not a real practical use of AR.

This article explains how augmented reality may help to get people excited for the release of a film.

When I first learned about Tumblr, the first service that jumped to my mind as competitive was Twitter. Tumblr is very different than Twitter. Infact Twitter is a service you use to tell people what you are doing, but you use Tumblr to share those experiences… Tumblr is Next.

Tumblr is a platform that makes it easy to create Tumblelogs, a variation of a blog, that favors short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging. It’s more complex and interesting than Twitter.

It enables you to create text posts, audio posts, photo posts, video posts, share links, even transcribe or post chats or dialogue you’ve overheard. Tumblr is truly a valuable, branded, content generation platform. A smart young adult digesting content, commenting on it and contextualizing it for their audience. That’s far more valuable.

Dunbar’s number is a theoretical cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. These are relationships in which an individual knows who each person is, and how each person relates to every other person. Proponents assert that numbers larger than this generally require more restricted rules, laws, and enforced norms to maintain a stable, cohesive group. No precise value has been proposed for Dunbar’s number, but a commonly cited approximation is 150.

According to Cameron Marlow, Facebook’s “in-house sociologist,” that number is four if you are male and six if you are female. As the Economist reports this morning, Marlow’s research indicates that the average Facebook user has a network of about 120 friends, but only has two-way conversations with a very small subset of these ‘friends.’ Interestingly, even for those users who have a far larger number of friends (500+), those numbers barely grow (ten for men and sixteen for women).
